Several years ago researchers were looking for more efficent ways of keeping structers cooler on those fire friendly planets, this was one such facility used as testing grounds, after some success they moved on to bigger and better things, now it has been converted into a Deathmatch arena. Tournament officals agreed to keep the pool of molten rock exposed stating that it will give players more options when it comes to fraging their oponents.
